Short answer

Neither projection nor mobile delivery is automatically more modern or more accessible. Projection offers a shared, device-free reading point but can exclude seats with poor sightlines. Mobile subtitles can offer personal language choice and a closer reading position but depend on a usable device journey. Projection vs. Mobile Surtitles Is a Reading-Service Decision

The tempting version of this decision is a technology comparison: one large screen or many small ones. The consequential version is about audience experience. Where does a person look? Can they read without losing the performance? Must they own, charge, configure, or publicly ask for help with a device? Does every seat receive an equivalent view?

A projected display can support a collective rhythm because everyone reads the same line in the same place. It can also create a hierarchy of seats when architecture, distance, or neck angle makes the text comfortable for some people and difficult for others. Personal-device delivery can return choice and proximity to the reader, but only if the access journey does not replace a visual barrier with a digital one.

The useful question is therefore not “Which format is better?” It is “Which combination of reading conditions, audience choice, and operational support best reduces the barriers that this production and venue can reasonably address?”

Compare the Complete Audience Service Before the Equipment

  • Sightlines and attention: Can people read from the front, back, sides, balconies, and accessible seating without repeatedly abandoning the stage picture?
  • Choice and privacy: Can a person choose a language or access track without having to explain a disability, language need, or device situation to staff or neighbours?
  • Device dependence and alternatives: What happens if someone has no suitable phone, limited battery, unfamiliar settings, poor connectivity, or difficulty using a QR code—and what supported non-phone route is available?
  • Shared experience: Does the production benefit from a common visual focus, or would individual reading positions reduce strain and distraction?
  • Paid support and recovery: Are text preparation, audience guidance, live operation, relief, and correction funded, and can front-of-house and the operator recover from a delivery failure?

What Projection Gives—and What It Can Withhold

Projection asks little of the audience once they are seated. There is no personal-device setup, the venue can control typography and brightness centrally, and the shared display can become part of the production's visual composition. For one or two common language tracks in a room with tested sightlines, that simplicity is a substantial advantage.

Its weakness is that a single screen does not create a single reading condition. Masking, scenery, balconies, distance, glare, and the angle between text and action can distribute access unevenly. Adding more projected languages can also reduce text size or overload the shared frame. A technically visible screen is not enough; it must be comfortably readable from the seats people will actually use, not only from the control booth or the best-priced row.

What Mobile Delivery Gives—and What It Demands

Mobile delivery can place text closer to the reader and allow people to choose among available languages or access tracks privately. It can be valuable in flexible, touring, or architecturally difficult spaces where one projected surface cannot serve the room well. Browser entry can also avoid requiring an app installation.

But “use your own phone” transfers part of the service onto the audience. Device ownership, battery, data settings, Wi-Fi, screen brightness, familiarity with device settings, venue phone policies, and the physical effort of looking between phone and stage all matter. Hybrid Delivery Is a Third Design, Not a Free Upgrade

Offering both projection and mobile access can be the most inclusive choice when the two paths serve genuinely different reading or language needs. It preserves a shared display while giving some audience members a closer position or another language. It can also provide a partial fallback when one display path fails.

Hybrid delivery also creates two experiences to explain, rehearse, monitor, and recover. The text tracks, cue timing, audience instructions, brightness policies, and operator responsibilities must remain coherent. Adding a second screen without paid staffing and testing the second journey can multiply confusion rather than access.

Rehearse the Access Journey and the Failure Journey

Test projection from representative seats, including side, balcony, rear, and accessible seating. Test mobile entry with the public instructions rather than a saved technical link. Where possible, test with people who use the intended access path, explain how their input will be used, obtain informed consent, keep participation voluntary, collect only necessary information, and provide fair compensation for requested expertise. Do not require a diagnosis, proof of disability, language background, or device ownership. A control-booth check cannot reveal every reading barrier.

Then rehearse failure: a blocked sightline, a lost projector feed, a phone that will not join, a QR code that cannot be scanned, or a cue that must be recovered after the performance diverges from the script. Decide what front-of-house and the operator can do without requiring the audience to diagnose the system during the show.
